Government has rejected some IMF proposals: Minister

The government has rejected some proposals made by the IMF with regard to the 2026 budget, Minister of Trade Wasantha Samarasinghe told Parliament today.
The Minister said the proposal by the IMF to impose a property tax from March this year was turned down by the government. He said the property tax will be enforced from 2027.
"We also turned down an IMF proposal for a salary increment, which is less than the inflation rate. We informed the IMF that a salary hike will have to be more than the inflation rate as per the mandate we have received," he said.
