U.S. embassy issues security alert for US Citizens in Sri Lanka

Due to the current political situation, the United States Embassy in Colombo has issued a Security Alert for US citizens in Sri Lanka. The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens of an increased likelihood of political turmoil, civil unrest, and demonstrations as a result of the President of Sri Lanka's decision to dismiss the Prime Minister and suspend parliament.

The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens of the probability of a large protest on October 30, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. near the Prime Minister's residence, Temple Trees, in Colombo. The Embassy reminds citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence and advised to "avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations." While the security alert is issued nationwide, specific locations of likely gathering points include, but are not limited to, Temple Trees, Town Hall, Lipton Circus, Liberty Circle, and Parliament.
