Ban to open Sterlite factory - Supreme Court verdict
The Supreme Court today ruled that the decision of the National Green Tribunal to open the Sterlite plant has been banned.
The public struggle erupted against the Sterlite plant, functioning in Thoothukudi. The public staged a massive protest over the environmental degradation. 13 people were shot dead by police on May 22 last year to suppress the fight. The tension increased.
Following the general public's struggle, the Tamil Nadu government ordered to seal the Sterlite plant in Tuticorin on May 28 last year.The National Green Tribunal, which examined the case filed by the Vedanta team in the National Green Tribunal, conducted a team led by Tarun Agarwal. In that study, the Sterlite plant was said to have no environmental impact.
The National Green Tribunal ordered the reopening of the Sterlite plant on December 15 last year. In this case, the Tamil Nadu Government filed a case against the Green Tribunal that there was no power to investigate the case. The Vedanta court also ordered the state government to open the Sterlite plant. Today, in this case, the verdict was passed, as the inquiry was held in the presence of a two-person session led by Justice Rohinton Nariman.
