Sports Minister urges media to back the players

Minister of Sports Harin Fernando says the general public and the media should cherish the national cricket players who had worked tirelessly to register a Test match win in South Africa.Speaking to media in Colombo, Minister Fernando also commented on a post-match video circulating on social media platforms.

The Minister said he will not pursue the matter further and stressed that players should be allowed express their emotions.He said, non-mainstream media or what he termed as gossip media tend to destroy the reputation of national players often.

The Minister said, "The national team after going through a difficult period and after some hard yards won a game in South Africa. As players, we know after a game we express our emotions. This incident did not happen on the road and it was within the dressing room.

Minister Fernando said he has identified the people behind the incident but noted that he will not pursue the matter because he loves and understands the game.He added, " I request the media not to sensationalize certain spur of the moment comments and drag the team down. "This incident was the main news on several channels. We have bigger issues to address.
