Attack on Tamil journalist in Jaffna strongly condemned
An attack on a Tamil journalist in Jaffna yesterday was strongly condemned today. Tamil National Alliance Parliamentarian S. Sritharan told Parliament that justice must be ensured for the journalist. He said that the attack was seen as a warning to the media in the North. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) in a letter to President Maithripala Sirisena expressed concern over the attack on journalist Nadarajah Kugarajah.
PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in his letter has condemned the brutal attack on a journalist for doing his job and urged the concerned authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and hold the officer responsible for this attack. According to Free Media Movement (FMM), the Acting Officer-in-Charge of the Kopay police station attacked Kugarajah while he was recording an incident in Kokkuvil.
Kugarajah, a journalist from Dan TV, a Tamil television channel had been threatened not to record the incident, but when he didn’t stopped his coverage the police officer attacked and injured the journalist. Kugarajah was later admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.
