Mahinda Rajapakse faction wants to retain Executive Presidency

The Mahinda Rajapaksha camp has rejected the proposal presented by the JVP to abolish the Executive Presidency.

A special discussion was held this evening between Leader of the Opposition Mahinda Rajapaksa, several Parliamentarians of the Joint Opposition and JVP leaders.

Speaking to NewsRadio, United People’s Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardene said the Joint Opposition had informed the JVP that it cannot consent to the proposal to abolish the existing Executive Presidency.

However, MP Gunawardene said during cordial discussions, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa had informed that the Joint Opposition is willing to discuss matters concerning a new electoral system for parliamentary elections, pruning of powers of the Executive, and to expedite the conduct of the General Election.

Parliamentarians Mahinda Rajapaksa, Dinesh Gunawardene and Dallas Alahapperuma represented the Joint Opposition faction while MPs Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Vijitha Herath and Sunil Handunetti represented the JVP camp during the meeting.
