Due to the heavy showers experienced in the Kilinochchi District the area had gone under water. Further, a tank in the Mankulam area had breached and the A9 traffic has been affected as a result, the District Disaster Management Centre officials said.

The Killinochchi district had experienced rainfall of over 250 mm last night (21) and with the sluice gates of the Iranamadu tank being opened, many of the low lying areas had been inundated.

The security forces warned those traveling to Jaffna on the A9 to be cautious as the Mankulam tank had breached its bund.

A large number of families in Killinochchi have been displaced due to the flooding and the security forces and the disaster management officers are engaged in rescuing those stranded.

The water level of the Iranamadu tank had risen to 37 feet, while the spill level id 36 feet, according to the Killinochchi irrigation officers.
