Union decides to remove Three-Wheeler meters

The Self-employed Three Wheeler Drivers Union has decided to remove or deactivate fare meters from their three wheelers and charge passengers at their own discretion, owing to the recent fuel price hike.
The Chairman of the Union Sunil Jayawardene however remarked that drivers are anticipating a fuel concession for passenger three wheelers.
He said the Union has called for the President to provide three wheeler drivers the said fuel price concession, adding a letter sent to the President in this regard has been forwarded to the Minister of Finance.
The Chairman however noted the union is yet to receive any official response.
He warned protests could ensure in future in opposition of fuel price hikes.
Meanwhile the All Island Three-wheeler Drivers Owners Association says although fuel prices have been increased, three wheeler fares will not be raised.
The Chairman of the Association Sudil Jayaruk said fares would only be increased if a litre of 92 Octane Petrol is increased up to Rs. 140.
He stated the Association decided to maintain current fares at Rs. 50 for the first Kilometre and the second Kilometre at Rs. 40.
Jayaruk noted the group decided to maintain prices keeping in mind the needs of the commuting public.
