Communication, power cables gutted in fire on Pamban road bridge

Rameswaram (Tamilnadu): An electrical short circuit led to a part of the communication and power cables in Pamban road bridge, the main link between the mainland and the island town of Rameswaram, getting burnt in a fire Tuesday, the police said.

Fire service units took an hour to put out the flames, they said.

Electricity workers were now engaged in repairing the damage, and it would take three days to fully restore communication and other cables.

The total damage on the Pamban road bridge that runs for 2.5 km, was estimated to be Rs 5 lakh.

The bridge, constructed on the sea, connects Rameswaram island with the mainland.
