Sri Lanka trapped by the UNHRC- Wijeyadasa

United People's Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe says Sri Lanka has trapped itself by agreeing to co-sponsor a resolution on the country at the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Speaking during the Committee Stage Debate on the 2019 Budget the MP said Sri Lanka has been caught in an international deadlock.

The Parliamentarian noted certain Ministers and MPs have failed to evolve from the slave or colonial attitude adding therefore the country is facing a major crisis owing to certain agreements they signed.

MP Rajapaksa stressed as a member country of the United Nations the country’s sovereignty is equal to that of the United States and questioned the necessity for the country to abide by the requests made by other countries.

Responding to MP Wijeyadasa’s claim Leader of the House Minister Lakshman Kiriella said Sri Lanka will face no negative impacts as a result of co-sponsoring the UNHRC resolution.

The Minister claimed the country was cornered in the world when three resolutions were passed against the country in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Minister Kiriella stressed if Mahinda Rajapaksa was re elected into power in January 2015, the country would have been on the verge of economic sanctions adding however over the years the good governance government was able to hold discussions and to ease international pressure.

The Minister added Sri Lanka cannot be at loggerheads with the international community and should move with the world.

Minister Kiriella stressed the Steering Committee has no agreement on the executive presidency or the electoral system claiming however there is an agreement on power devolution.

The Minister said in a similar way the country will be able to reach an agreement on other issues with the assistance of the international community.
