Date to re-implement capital punishment fixed- President

In another explosive declaration, President Maithripala Sirisena says he has decided on a time frame to re-implement the capital punishment in Sri Lanka, with convicted drug offenders to be executed in the near future.

Speaking during an anti-drug circulation event in Modara, President Sirisena said the present administration has taken a number of steps to strengthen laws in a bid to curtail the illicit drug circulation in the country.

The President noted despite a number of challenges he will continue to engage in the battle to eliminate illicit drugs in the country.

The Head of State also urged the general public to support the government’s initiative to eradicate drugs under the ‘Drug Free Nation’ programme.
