I am 100% fit- Angelo Mathews
Former skipper Angelo Mathews says he has fully recovered from the recurring injury which resulted in the National Team missing his services during several bilateral series in the recent past.
Mathews has been injury-prone due to the heavy workload he had to endure following the retirement of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.
Mathews also missed the recent Sri Lanka tour of South Africa and the national selectors were fretting over his availability at the 2019 cricket World Cup.
Following his rehabilitation, Mathews made himself available for the upcoming Super Provincial ODI tournament.
He was appointed as the captain of the Dambulla side in the four-team tournament which will also serve as selection games to finalize the touring party for the World Cup.
When asked about injury concerns Mathews said he is 100% fit and has commenced training in preparation of the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
Mathews said although he has not commenced bowling drills, he would also like to contribute with the ball at the showpiece event in England and Wales.
However the former national captain, if selected, is likely to play as a specialist batsman for Sri Lanka.Mathews’ inclusion will provide much needed experience and stability in the middle order.Sri Lanka is scheduled to travel to Scotland in mid-May to play two ODIs ahead of the World Cup warm-up encounters. Sri Lanka will commence its quest for another world crown on the 1st of June with a game against New Zealand in Cardiff.
The 2019 Cricket World Cup is set to kick-start on the 30th of May with hosts England taking on South Africa in the curtain raiser at the Oval.
