Mumbai stun Hyderabad, Chennai down Punjab

South Africa's Faf du Plessis struck a brisk half-century in his first Indian Premier League game of the season to help Chennai Super Kings defeat Kings XI Punjab by 22 runs last night.

Du Plessis made 54 off 38 deliveries in his team’s 160-3, a total their bowlers defended after restricting Punjab to 5-138 at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium.

He built crucial partnerships including a 56-run opening stand with Australia’s Shane Watson, who made 26, to lay the foundation of the total after the defending champions elected to bat first.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni scored 37.

Punjab's chase was jolted by two early wickets in the second over including the big-hitting Chris Gayle caught behind for five off veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh.

KL Rahul, who made 55, and Sarfaraz Khan, who top-scored with 67, then put on 110 runs for the third wicket but Punjab were unable to keep up to speed with an ever increasing run rate.

West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph enjoyed a dream Indian Premier League debut after returning best ever figures of 6-12 in the T20 tournament to help Mumbai Indians beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 40 runs last night.

The 22-year-old, who joined the Mumbai squad in place of the injured Adam Milne of New Zealand, bowled a maiden in his brilliant 3.4 overs to help his team thrash hosts Sunrisers Hyderabad by 40 runs.

Joseph went past the previous best bowling effort of 6-14 by Pakistan's Sohail Tanvir for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL's inaugural edition in 2008.

Chasing 137 for victory, Hyderabad were dismissed for just 96 in 17.4 overs with Deepak Hooda top-scoring with 20.

Joseph got the in-form David Warner of Australia for 15 on his very first ball.

Warner's opening partner Jonny Bairstow managed just 16, after falling to leg-spinner Rahul Chahar, who took two wickets

Earlier, West Indies batsman Kieron Pollard smashed an unbeaten 46 off 26 deliveries to give three-time champions Mumbai a fighting 7-136 after they were reeling at 7-97.
