Scholarship Exam no longer compulsory

Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says the Grade Five Scholarship Examination will no longer be compulsory for students.

The Education Ministry said a circular pertaining to the decision will be issued later today.

Speaking to NewsRadio, Secretary to the Ministry of Education Nihal Ranasinghe said following the issuance of the circular, students will not be compelled to sit for the competition exam.

President Maithripala Sirisena on several occasions announced that the Grade Five Scholarship Examination will be abolished and replaced with a separate competitive examination.

A committee was also appointed to deliberate the continuation of the Grade Five Scholarship Examination.
