Bus strike from midnight over fine increase

The All Ceylon Private Bus Worker's Association says it will launch a 24-hour token strike from midnight.

Western Province Organizer of the Union, Kumararatne Renuka said the Association strongly opposes the government's recent decision to increase the minimum fine on several traffic offenses to 25,000 rupees.

Accordingly to a recent gazette, a 25,000-rupee minimum fine will be imposed on motorists for driving without a valid licence, driving under the influence, employing a driver without a licence, driving through railway crossings in a haphazard manner, driving without protective gear, speeding and overtaking from the left side.

Organizer of the Union, Kumararatne Renuka said the operators demand the retraction of the proposal immediately.
