Planned railway strike called off

The planned railway trade union action that was scheduled to get underway at midnight has been called off following discussions with Minister of Transport Arjuna Ranatunga.

A group of railway trade unions decided to launch a 48-hour strike from midnight.

Accordingly, train drivers, controllers, station masters, guards and managers decided to withdraw from services for a period of two days until midnight on Thursday.
