No-Confidence motion can be defeated with ease

The United National Party says if the Joint Opposition presents a No-Confidence motion against the Minister of Finance it can be defeated with certainty.

UNP Parliamentarian Chaminda Wijesiri said any such attempt by the same group who failed to defeat the 2019 budget is no cause for concern.

The MP said the if the Opposition defeated the Budget it would have been a no confidence motion against the government itself, but they did not have the ability to achieve it.

MP Wijesiri stated there was no need for such a motion.

The MP added these false accusations were raised a few days after the majority of Parliament had voted for the Budget and had decided it was suitable and will be followed.

MP Wijesiri also added many issues had been raised during the Committee Stage Debates, yet these questions had been answered in Parliament.

The MP therefore noted the No-Confidence motion was futile.

Speaking at a media briefing yesterday Parliamentarian Bandula Gunawardena revealed the Joint Opposition has decided to bring a No-Confidence motion against the Finance Minister.

The MP claimed the motion is being filed on charges that the 2019 budget allegedly contains false information on the economy.

Meanwhile our reporter contacted and inquired of the JVP's views on the No-Confidence motion. .JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Ratnayake said the Joint Opposition is preparing for a political drama by presenting such a motion.

The MP said it was not clear if this move was merely drama to create news, or if its target was Mangala Samaraweera, when the no confidence motion was presented.

He noted if the group alongside SB Dissanayake had voted against the Budget, it may have been defeated. The MP added a decision will be made once the motion is presented.

MP Ratnayake also added individuals like SB Dissanayake had agreed to it earlier even though they now stand against Minister Mangala Samaraweera’s budget. The MP stated this was nothing more than political drama.
