Annual fishing ban in TN from tonight
The annual 60-day fishing ban along the coast of Tamilnadu will come into effect from midnight today.
It was introduced in 2003 in the State to give a natural window for marine life to replenish itself and improve biodiversity in the coastal region.
In turn, it is said to yield better catch for fisherman once the ban period is over. The regulation bans fishing in deep seas along the coast of Tamilnadu from Tiruvallur to Kanyakumari during this period.
The ban that begins midnight today ends 14 July. Fishermen are given cash compensation by the government for the loss of livelihood during the period. However, fishermen have made an appeal to the government to enhance the cash compensation in tune with rising living cost. Price of seafood is expected to increase by 50 to 100 per cent during the ban period.
