Fate of Madush’s diamond lies in the hands of the AG!

The Police Headquarters has sought the advice of the Attorney general on whether the diamond worth around Rs. 7 billion stolen from a businessman in Arawwala by Makandure Madush’s gang should be confiscated or not.

The stolen diamond weighing 140 grams was found by the Peliyagoda Division Crimes Unit where the gem was hidden in a house at Keselwatte, Panadura by the criminal named Kevuma, who carried out the secret operation for Madush.

In order to determine its value, the Science and Technology Ministry had said that around 300 grams would have to be scraped off the diamond. However, the Arawwala businessman claiming to be the owner of the diamond had opposed it.

The police said that they had sought the advice of the AG regarding the fate of the diamond as in order to keep such a diamond in one’s possession the owner needs to be able to prove how he had brought it into the country and possess a permit from the Gem and Jewellery Authority. However, the businessman has neither.
