Conditional permission to hold memorial for Thoothukudi deaths

The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court today granted permission to organise a memorial meeting to pay homage to those who lost their lives during the shoot-out in Thoothukudi last year.

The court, however, said there should not be any procession and the meeting should be held at a private hall 22 May.

The High Court has also said not more than 250 people should participate in the event and it should be held between 9 am and 11 am.

The petition to conduct the meeting was filed by Fathima Babu. The government’s side asked the petitioner to consider another date to hold the meeting as election results will be announced the next day (23 May).

On 22 May last year, 13 people were shot dead during the anti-Sterlite protests in the Pearl City.
