TN Baby-selling racket: Probe reveals sale of 30 newborns

“Following the probe done so far, it has emerged that a total of 30 newborns including 24 girls have been sold,” said the CB-CID wing of Tamilnadu probing the baby-selling case in Namakkal.

The racket came to light last month after a audio clip of a former nurse, who claimed to have 30 years of experience in selling newborns went viral on the social media, prompting Tamilnadu Health Secretary Beela Rajesh to instruct the director of the Health and Rural Welfare department to look into the claim of the woman, who was later identified as retired nurse Amudhavalli. She along with her husband and an ambulance driver are among those arrested.

The case was transferred to CB-CID on 29 April. In a new development, the investigation revealed sale of 30 newborns and buyers as well as middlemen were brought under the probe ambit.

However, the period over which the babies were allegedly sold have not been mentioned. The special investigation wing will now bring the parents of the children as well as the ‘buyers,’ besides middlemen, under the probe ambit, the release issued by the CB-CID.
