"VEMAL DIDN'T RETURN MY MONEY!" - POPULAR PRODUCER'S STATEMENT!
Kalavani 2 is an upcoming film that has Vemal and Oviya in the lead roles. It is directed by A.Sarkunam and the trailer had released a few weeks ago. But now, controversy has hit the film, as there is a legal case going on between the producers, distributors and Vemal.
Explaining the controversy surrounding the film, the director Sarkunam sent a statement to the press, stating that:
Actor Vemal had received a discussed amount from Marina Pictures Singaravelan on 13.10.2017 after signing on copyrights agreement to produce Kalavani 2 for his own production studio. However, he had created an impression by displaying to everyone that the film is being produced by director Sargunam. Marina Pictures Singaravelan who has acquired the Copyrights had given the Tamil Nadu theatrical rights to Dhanalakshmi Pictures.
However, the latter opted for the legal proceedings as the Tamil Nadu rights were not given to them as promised and got the verdict of partial ban on film’s release for 6 weeks. Actor Vemal, director Sargunam and producer Singaravelan had been listed as defendants in this case.
At this situation, director Sargunam has approached the court saying that he has nothing to do with the agreements signed between both the parties and has requested the judiciary to remove his name from the defendants’ list.
Based on the documents he has submitted, the court has passed the verdict that Sargunam has no objection for film’s release, but others haven’t compromised on this and that the case can be carried forward with the submission of additional documents.
Consequently, Dhanalakshmi Pictures has now decided to appeal against this verdict at Court. It has claimed that the movie shouldn’t be released until the legal proceedings are over. In case of not going by this, the production house has decided to send notice to Screen Scene Media Entertainment, Kasthuri Films, leading satellite channel and overseas distributors that they would be held responsible for the financial compensation.
Although, the partial ban of ‘Kalavani 2’ has been lifted, there still exists a problem over releasing the film.
When producer Singaravelan was asked his opinion about this, he spoke to the Press and said: "On 30th August 2017, Vemal was celebrating his birthday, and in an event, he announced that Kalavani 2 will be produced after his subsequent film Mannar Vagaiyara. A few days later he came to me, asking me to buy the copy rights of the film for an amount of 5 crore. I paid 1.5 crore and got it, and I have the receipt of the same with me.
The shooting didn't start on time, and I kept following up with him. All of a sudden, in April 2018, the team revealed that the shooting has started, and the film will be produced by Sarkunam himself. So, I went to him and asked for refunding the money, for which assured that he will get me the copy rights of the film.
Now he is saying that someone else took over the film, and I(Singaravelan) don't have any rights over the film. Therefore, I decided to move the court and sought a 6-week ban on the film's release. Director Sarkunam challenged this, for which the Madras High Court ordered for Sarkunam's name to be removed off the defendants list. But, the ban on the film stays.
For the case to fall apart, they have stacked up false allegations that I've harassed them. The court asked for an explanation, and I've submitted all evidence that I didn't anything of that sorts. Now we are going to appeal against freeing Sarkunam from the case. We expect justice to win. The next hearing is on Monday."
