Those inciting racism face 10 year prison sentence

Acting Inspector General of Police Chandana Deepal Wickremeratne says those found guilty of inciting racism can be imprisoned to up to 10 years in jail.
Issuing a special statement, Acting IGP Wickremeratne said those who are apprehended for being involved in communal violence will be charged under non-bailable offences.
The Acting IGP added during tense situations, Police has been acting with restraint, claiming that extremists continue to engage in violent activities.
Acting IGP Wickremeratne said the public should not mistake Police personnel’s patience as a sign of weakness, stating that for 30-years the Police worked towards eliminating a brutal terrorist organisation, and highlighted that these group will not be a challenge to combat.
Following the Easter Sunday Attacks, the Acting IGP stated persons of all religious groups extended their support to investigate and bring perpetrators to book.
He said a small group that did not cooperate or aid law enforcement officers are attempting to derail peace and harmony in the country.
These individuals, the Acting IGP said should stop these violent activities, and should not victimise innocent Sri Lankans.
The Acting IGP said those involved in communal violence will be charged under non-bailable offences, and will also face a 10 year jail sentence.
