District secretary blamed for flood damage in K’nochchi flood disaster !
The strong adverse impact on Kilinochchi district from the recent flooding following inclement weather has been blamed on the failure of the district secretary and other officials to act swiftly on the notices issued by the Department of Irrigation.
The DS did not act, despite a notification in advance that the spill gates of Iranamadu tank would be opened on December 22 following heavy rains.
When the ensuing flooding hit, the DS and other officials had been attending the annual get-together of the Kandawala divisional secretariat.
Irrigation engineer Sudakaran said the DS, military and disaster management officials had all been informed on December 06 about the imminent opening of the spill gates.
The flooding affected Dharmapuram, Murusumudai, Sivapuram, Udasalpuram and other areas of Paranthan.
Attempts to contact the DS for a comment failed.
