Mother unable to enrol children to school,commits suicide by jumping in front of train

Giving evidence before the Colombo municipal accidental death court the victim’s mother Selliah Rita Saros (65) said her daughter was upset as her children had not received a school and the school had demanded a lot of money to enrol her children, suspecting that she would have resorted to committing suicide over it.

The mother who committed suicide has been identified as 32-year-old Janet Dharshani Ramiah, a resident of Paramananda Road, Kotahena and her two children Kingsley Premanath Asiriyan (08) and Kingsley Premanath Dion Krish (05).

The inquest was held by Colombo Municipal Inquirer into Sudden Deaths Iresha Deshani.

In her statement, the mother of the victim further said, “The victims are my eldest daughter and her two children. They were overseas with her husband and over a visa issue they had to return back to Sri Lanka. The children studied in English and therefore, could not attend a normal school. They tried to get the children into an international school, but the fees was not affordable. As a result my daughter and her children were very upset. On June 13th we went to another school, but they demanded a big sum and we could not afford it. My daughter told me that she would not be a burden on me. On 14th June around 1.00 pm she told me she was going to the church with the two children. The children are very obedient and listen to the mother. I feel that due to her disgruntlement over this issue, she might have committed suicide with her two children.”

The autopsy was carried out by the National Hospital JMO M.N. Ruhul.

Having taken into consideration the evidence presented, the Colombo Municipal Inquirer into Sudden Deaths Iresha Deshani ordered the Colpetty Police to produce the train driver before court on June 29th.
