Railway trade unions to launch strike at 2pm

Railway trade unions have threatened to launch strike action at 2pm today.Secretary to the Locomotive Engine Drivers Union Indika Dodangoda attributed the trade union action to the failure of the government to resolve issues concerning salary anomalies of railway employees.

A 48-hour trade union strike was due to commence at midnight yesterday, however following assurances given by Minister of Transport Arjuna Ranathunga, the strike was temporarily postponed to 2 this afternoon.

Dodangoda noted that trade union representatives are due to meet Finance Ministry officials today and stressed that if a favourable solution was not given, unions will launch an indefinite strike.

According to the union secretary, all drivers, engineers station masters and other employees are due to join the strike.
