9 office trains in service despite ongoing strike

Police and Army personnel have been deployed at a majority of Railway Stations to ensure security, in light of the ongoing Railway trade union strike.

However minimum public presence was witnessed at railway stations this morning.Despite the strike, nine office trains were in service and arrived in Colombo this morning.

When inquired by NewsRadio General Manager of Railways Dilantha Fernando said around 40 scheduled train journeys were cancelled in the wake of the ongoing strike.

Fernando however assured the same office trains will once again depart Colombo this evening. Meanwhile steps have also been taken to ensure that a train transporting fuel to the Bandaranaike International Airport will also be operated.

A 48 hour token strike launched by railway trade unions at midnight yesterday is currently underway.Railway station masters, drivers, controllers, guards and supervisors, launched the strike based on concerns over salary anomalies.
