Nadigar Sangam elections: Tight security for ballot boxes kept in locker

A day after elections to Nadigar Sangam, the ballot boxes are kept in the locker of a bank in Nungambakkam and tight security has been provided for them.

The Madras High Court had passed an interim order on a petition filed by actor Vishal, permitting the association to conduct the elections as scheduled 23 June. However, it directed that the results of the elections shall not be declared till 8 July.

The elections were held at St Ebbas school in Mylapore yesterday under the supervision of retired judge Padmanabhan.

Over 1,400 votes were polled and over 1,000 postal ballots were received. The election witnessed a direct fight between Nasser-Vishal’s Pandavar Ani and Bhagyaraj-Ishari Ganesh’s Swami Sankaradas Ani. ‘

There was plenty of action leading to the polls.

On Wednesday, Registrar of Societies announced that the elections scheduled for 23 June were cancelled. It said it needed time to enquire with those suspended or dismissed from the association for various reasons and have no right to vote.

“Since it may take some time, the election process would be stopped till then,” it added.

Following this, Vishal filed a petition for urgent hearing with the Madras High Court challenging the Registrar of Societies’ announcement to cancel elections.

Hearing his representation, Justice P D Audikesavalu passed an interim order, permitting the association to conduct the elections as scheduled 23 June. The judge, however, directed that the results shall not be declared till 8 July.
