SLR to be declared an essential service

A gazette notification is due to be issued declaring Sri Lanka Railways an essential service.The proposal in this regard has been directed to President Maithripala Sirisena by the Ministry of Transport.
Secretary to the Ministry of Transport MP Jayampathy speaking to Jaffnazone.com said steps in this regard were taken following the advice of subject Minister Arjuna Ranatunga.
The Secretary noted they believe the President will take measures to issue the gazette promptly. A programme will also be initiated to recruit retired Engine Drivers, Guards, Station Masters, Signal Controllers and Supervisors.
Issuing a statement the Transport Ministry said the programme to recruit new employees will commence at 9am this Friday at the Shalika Grounds, in Narahenpita.
The Ministry noted this measure was being resorted to in a bid to prevent the inconveniences caused to commuters in the event of trade union action by railway employees based on various demands.
