More information about Puliyankulam weapons bag
The Puliyankulam Police had arrested three persons including a woman on January 6th during a search operation on the house in which the suspect who had abandoned a bag containing explosives and weapons, had resided in. The police had also seized bombs and a weapon during the arrest of the woman.
The Puliyankulam Police had arrested the woman and two others based on information recovered from the mobile phone found in the bag the suspect had abandoned in the Vavuiya Puliyankulam area near the Puthur Kovil. On January 6th the police and army had searched the house in which the suspect had lived and had found a T56 rifle and two mortar bombs.
The two suspects were arrested for aiding the suspect while the woman was arrested for having provided lodging to the suspect. The three suspects were produced before the Vavuniya Magistrate and held for questioning on 72-hour detention orders.
The Vavuniya division unresolved crimes unit officers had arrested another suspect on January 5th for having assisted the main suspect to flee.
The suspect who abandoned the bag, an LTTE member?
The bag abandoned by the main suspect contained four hand grenades, a modern micro pistol and magazine, 18 -9mm bullets, a compass, two mobile phones, solar chargers and equipment to survive in a jungle including pain killers, tooth brush, tooth paste and several sarongs and food.
Investigations have revealed that the suspect who fled had been a powerful LTTE member during the war. The raid was conducted by the Puliyankulam Police on the directions of the Northern Province Senior DIG Roshan Fernando.
