LRT a step to Western Province Megapolis - PM

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the commencement of the Colombo Light Rail project will be a monumental step towards transforming the Western Province into a modern 21 century Megapolis.

The inauguration of the Colombo Light Rail project commenced under the auspices of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday.

Under the first phase of the project, a 15km track will be commissioned with financial aid from Japan.Accordingly commuters will be able to travel between Malabe and Colombo within 30 minutes.

Speaking during the inauguration, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe noted that growing traffic congestion in the city of Colombo will be tackled through the LRT project, initiated by the present administration.

The Premier insisted that the government will continue to push for the use of new technology to combat global challenges.

Speaking during the event, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka said the LRT project is one the biggest people-oriented programs in the history of the country.

The Minister said the government will create substantial direct and indirect jobs through the Colombo Light Rail project.
