No confidence motion against govt postponed

The motion of no confidence against the government, the cabinet and the Prime Minister, which was tabled by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) in parliament today (10 July), was scheduled to be held until 7 pm, but it had to be canceled due to the lack of a quorum and absences of speakers.  

Once the debate was adjourned due to the absence of a quorum and it was resumed after the ringing of bell with the presence of quorum.However, the debate was adjourned once again due to the absence of speakers.  

The no-confidence motion, on the grounds that the government failed to prevent the terrorist attack on Easter Sunday, was scheduled for debate today and tomorrow.  The Chief Opposition Whip is responsible for maintaining the quorum when debating a no-confidence motion.  

During the debate 198 minutes were allocated for government and opposition and a list of 17 opposition MPs was presented by Chief Opposition Whip Mahinda Amaraweera.  The Chief Government Whip, Minister Gayantha Karunatilake, had given the names of 17 government MPs.  The debate is due to resume today (11).
