Elections Commission finalizing arrangements for the presidential elections in due time

Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has said that the Commission is finalizing arrangements for the conduct of the Presidential election during the scheduled period. He made this statement at a media briefing held in Bandaragama yesterday.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Deshapriya said the Presidential elections will be held during the scheduled period that is between November 10th and December 08th. "An issue has arisen whether the Provincial Council elections or the Presidential elections is to be held first. There is a question among politicians, journalists and the general public whether holding the Provincial Council Elections first will be a hindrance to the Presidential Election. There is no problem."

The Chairman said the Election Commission is of the view that Provincial Council Elections should be held first. "We have long talked with the ruling party and everyone who believes that provincial council elections should be held beforehand. Even at this late stage we still stand on the grounds that the Elections Commission should hold a provincial council election before the presidential election. However, on behalf of the Election Commission we would like to inform the people that it is not an obstacle to hold a presidential election."

"The Election Commission is working with full vigor to hold the presidential election within the prescribed time period, from 1st November to 8th December," the chairman said.
