Gota, Sajith camps weaken: Both retreat

The UNP hopeful for the Presidential election Sajith Premadasa and SLPP hopeful Gotabhaya Rajapaksa are both highly doubtful to contest the next presidential election, the Ravaya newspaper reported.

The report states that Ranil Wickremesinghe is seriously indicating that he would contest the upcoming election and despite that Sajith Premadasa has still not been definitely confirmed to be the presidential candidate. These factors have cast serious doubts regarding his candidacy together with the fact that he would not be able to win the minority votes.

Although a party strongman coming forward to suggest that Ranil Wickremesinghe step down as the party leader, Sajith Premadasa’s uncertainty has made them hold back that proposal temporarily.

Meanwhile, it is reported that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has still not received the confirmation letter regarding the revoking of his US citizenship as well as the cases against him have all contributed to his uncertainty in contesting the presidential election.

It is reported that despite many calls to announce the Joint Opposition presidential candidate, Mahinda Rajapaksa has postponed that decision by referring to a date on August 11th.

It is also said that another group within the SLPP is spreading another story regarding the poor health condition of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka Mirror learns.

Meanwhile, in another twist, a prominent member of the group promoting Karu Jayasuriya as the presidential candidate is said to be discussing the possibility of swapping the President-Prime Minister posts.

Sajith Premadasa’s approval of the death sentence and the majority of the United National Front opposing it, as well as Sajith’s difference of opinion regarding the anti-terrorism act is said to have raised the odds against him.
