2 killed as MTC bus rams wall at Vadapalani depot

In a freak mishap, two Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) workers were killed and six others were injured when an MTC bus hit the wall of a resting room in Vadapalani depot in the city early today.

Police said the MTC bus 17-E was brought to the Vadapalani depot around 0100 hrs, when the driver inadvertently rammed into the wall of the resting Room, where the crew members were sleeping. In the impact, the resting room wall collapsed and the eight staff members were trapped under the debris.

Police and fire service personnel, along with other staff members present in the depot rescued them and shifted all the eight injured to hospital, where two of them died.The bus that rammed into the wall of the resting room at Vadapalani depot.

The deceased were identified as Bharati (30) and Sekar (48). Both of them were employed as mechanic in the depot. The injured were admitted to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. The police have registered a case and investigation is on.

The crew members of the depot did not operate buses for a couple of hours demanding a pucca resting room.

Transport Secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan, who visited the spot, said safety measures in all the 32 depots in the city would be reviewed and steps were taken to renovate 16 of them.
He said necessary assistance would be given to the families of the deceased and the injured.
