5 year sentence for H'Tota Mayor

Hambantota Mayor and Representative of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Eraj Fernando and another individual have been sentenced to 5 years in Prison over threatening a group of MP's with a ‘toy pistol’.

The verdict was issued by the Hambantota High Court Judge Thamara Tennekoon.The suspects were charged over threatening to attack a group of United National Party Parliamentarians who were engaged in an observational tour of the Mattala Airport and the Hambantota Port, with a firearm.

However Court also decreed that another three suspects named in the case be acquitted of all charges.

Among the group who were threatened in the incident, were at the time former opposition party members Ajith P Perera and Eran Wickramaratne among others. The case has been heard continuously for nearly 5 years.
