Lankan held over brutal killing in Adelaide

A Sri Lankan refugee faces years behind bars for a brutal killing in Adelaide.The Canberra Times reports the Lankan was recruited as a LTTE child soldier at the age of 12 before fleeing by boat to Australia.

The Lankan was found guilty of the murder of his housemate at their Penfield Gardens home, in March 2017.The victim suffered more than 40 separate injuries including a large wound to the neck.

The Sri Lankans attorney said his application for refugee status had been rejected and he faced the prospect of deportation once he serves his jail sentence.

The attorney told court that his client was also suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder related to his earlier experiences.

The prosecutor told court that the Lankan was considered an unlawful non-citizen and his last temporary protection visa had expired in September 2015.

He is due to be taken into immigration detention once his non-parole period had been completed and will be sentenced later this month.
