Cut down on red meat to save the planet and cut premature deaths say experts
There needs to be a drastic reduction in meat eating in order to protect the planet for future generations, according to a report from a panel of experts.
The EAT-Lancet Commission says a "planetary health diet" that moves to healthier, more sustainable eating habits around the world could prevent 11 million premature deaths per year by 2050.
Comprising of 37 experts from 16 countries specialising in health, nutrition, environmental sustainability, economics and
politics, the commission says red meat and sugar consumption would have to halve at least, while that of nuts, fruits, vegetables and legumes such as lentils and chickpeas must double.
