Sand sold to Malé at 180,000 a cube

The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau said that Sri Lanka has exported sand to Maldives at various times and that it is for the use of a Sri Lankan company engaged in construction activities in the Maldives.

Around eight cubes of sane have been exported at Rs. 180,000 per cube.

The Bureau further said that the mineral sand was used for filtering water for water pools and tube wells in the Maldives.

It further stated that previous reports citing that sand was being exported from Sri Lanka to build an island in the Maldives is baseless.

The Bureau further explained that in keeping with the mineral policy of Sri Lanka, mineral sand can only be exported for a special requirement and that it requires Cabinet approval.
