Tension and Excitement during protest against reopening liquor stores

A heated situation arose during a protest launched opposite the Colombo Fort Railway Station today by the United National Self-Employed Businessmen’s Association.

The protest was organized against the decision to reopen liquor stores at a time all small shops remain closed.

Protesters charged that associates of the government were granted permission to reopen liquor stores while small businessmen are burdened as they are unable to carry out trading activities.

Chairman of the Association Pradeep Charles claimed the law is being enforced differently to various groups.

He added the general public is unable to earn a living, while claiming the government is also undermining curfew.

Meanwhile a heated situation was reported when Police arrived during the protest, following which Chairman of the Association Pradeep Charles and several others who joined the protest were arrested.
