False fears spread over Constitution – Gayantha

Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka charges that an unnecessary fear is being created in the country pertaining to the proposed new Constitution.

The Minister speaking to media after calling on the Chief Prelates of the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters this morning said the United National Party is looking forward to elections in future particularly a General and Presidential Election.

He said the UNP look forward to elections in future particularly a general and presidential election which must be held this year, adding therefore the party is prepared for any election.

Furthermore he noted there is no crisis with regard to a Constitution.

He said opinions which are yet to be discussed have simply been presented in a report and a draft bill is nowhere in sight.

The Minister said a new Constitution is something a country needs after many years have passed, further remarking certain amendments are necessary; however such work is not carried out hastily.

He stated the opinions of the Chief Prelates, religious leaders and the public will be sought before formulating a new Constitution, adding regardless of who says what, the people can be assured that as a government the UNP will never do anything to harm the country.
