Geeganage Kulathissa released on bail

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Colombo Municipal Councillor Geeganage Kulathissa who was arrested for his involvement in the unrest at the premises of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation in Dematagoda on the 28th of October, has been released on bail.

The order was issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne this morning.

The suspect was released on a Rs.10,000 bail and two surety bail of to Rs.200,000 each.

The Municipal Councillor was meanwhile ordered to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department every Sunday.

Colombo Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne also warned him that unruly behaviour in future, breaching bail conditions, will result in him being arrested and remanded once again.

Furthermore the CID has arrested a relative of the Municipal Councillor, Gayan Kulawansha Kulathissa, in connection to the incident.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate ordered the suspect to be remanded till the 25th of January.

Meanwhile Attorneys informed Court that eight more suspects in connection to the incident are expected to surrender before Court.

However the Colombo Fort Magistrate informed the Attorneys to ensure the suspects surrender to the CID.

The Councillor was arrested on the 7th of January and was placed in remand custody.

The Colombo Crimes Division arrested Geeganage Kulathissa for allegedly being a part of a group that assaulted Minister Arjuna Ranatunga.

Meanwhile the officer attached to Minister Arjuna Ranathunga’s security detail arrested in connection to the death of an individual during the unrest was further remanded till the 1st of February.

NewsRadio Court correspondent said the bail application forwarded by the suspect was rejected by the Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne.
