‘Potassium chloride, not an organic fertiliser’

Senior Professor of Crop Science, of the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Peradeniya Buddhi Marambe says the 30,000MT of potassium chloride fertiliser imported to Sri Lanka to be distributed to farmers for the upcoming Maha season is not an organic fertiliser.

However, Prof. Marambe said the stock of fertiliser that has been imported is sufficient for the farming community.

Prof. Marambe speaking at a media briefing in Kandy said the effort is to ensure that farmers have sufficient stocks of fertiliser for harvesting.

However, he noted that the government through whatever means has imported a potassium chemical fertiliser and commended the move as it will be used for paddy cultivation.

Prof. Marambe said a certain percentage of potassium is required for paddy cultivation.
