Milco dumps stock of milk packets?
A large stock of flavoured milk packets produced by the Digana factory of Milco Pvt Ltd. has been dumped at the factory grounds on Jan. 12, reports say.
Internal sources from the factory say that the packets had been disposed of after a production issue.
The products were dumped whilst in their plastic packaging which had resulted in an environmental disaster as well.
Similar incidents were reported by the media last year as well.
Meanwhile it is said Milco is receiving stocks of substandard milk these days and this has led to production related issues. Recently, a large number of complaints have been made over fungus found in yogurt products.
However, the company pays Rs. 110 per litre of raw milk.
Meanwhile, the Milco chairman is facing allegations of issuing only yogurt, pasteurized milk and their newly introduced ice cream line while completely ignoring other dairy products such as liquid milk and butter.
During the last three years of the Good Governance government, Milco incurred a loss of over Rs. 2,000 million and was made a profit by the present Milco Chairman Lasantha Wickremasinghe.
Milco made a profit of more than 800 million rupees in 2020 and 2021, and after 2015 increased the price paid to dairy farmers by 30%, officials said.
Reports also say that Wickremasinghe has been replaced by Renuka Perera, the Managing Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
