No Rs. 5,000 allowance for teachers in 3 provinces!
The General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers' Union Joseph Stalin says that the allowance of Rs. 5,000 that was to be added to the salaries of public servants was not included in the payroll of many teachers in the North Central, Eastern and Central Provinces this month.
Stalin said he had inquired about this from the authorities regarding this issue based on complaints received from teachers and it was learnt that the authorities had not allocated enough money to pay the 5,000-rupee allowance.
He said the Rs. 5,000 allowance was a victory of a struggle waged by professionals, adding that it was totally unfair to discriminate teachers in some areas.
He noted that the decision had been taken not to include the Rs. 5000 allowance to some provinces in the January salary, even after the pay rolls were finalized.
Hence, he said that even though the Rs. 5,000 was not paid to these teachers, it was indicated in their pay sheets.
He added that teachers and principals were facing serious issues because of this mess and that the authorities were fully responsible for it.
Meanwhile, the Ampara Zonal Education Office had sent a letter to all principals and teachers in the area on Wednesday (19) informing them that the Rs. 5,000 allowance given to public servants has been temporarily suspended from January 2022.
The Accountant of the Ampara Zonal Education Office had requested in the letter that the relevant allowance shown in the pay slip should be disregarded as it was not added to the salary as decided at the Eastern Provincial Department of Education Accountants meeting.
