Increase of beggars in Colombo City!
In the face of the current financial crisis, the number of beggars on the streets of Colombo has increased significantly over the past two months in comparison to previous months.
According to the police, many of these beggars have been identified as those coming to Colombo from other areas.
This situation is predominantly seen in the Colombo City, where they are seen begging on the streets as families.
Colombo District Secretary Pradeep Yasaratne stated that about 300 beggars are currently begging in the city of Colombo alone.
In the Western Province alone, 671 beggars are currently said to be begging.
Further, Colombo Municipal Additional Coroner Iresha Samaraweera said that about 10 deaths of beggars are reported from Colombo alone every month.
Out of these deaths, 99% of them have no relatives.
