Is the decision of unmasking safe?
The Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) says the recent decision to mandate wearing face masks only during the use of public transport and when attending indoor functions is a "retrograde step" in controlling the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
Newly appointed Health Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana yesterday (18) said the wearing of face masks is no longer mandatory in other public, or private places.
Speaking about the decision, Jayasumana assured that the COVID-19 situation in Sri Lanka is 'very much under control'.
The AMS said while walking alone without a mask may be justified, there is still a substantial risk of contracting the coronavirus in mass outdoor gatherings.
Despite the drop in COVID cases reported in the country, there are new strains circulating (Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 in South Africa) in different regions of the world, with the potential to cause another wave of infections.
The association added that there is a scarcity of medicines and other medical reagents in Sri Lanka, stressing that an increase of COVID infections coupled with the inability to provide medical support for those in need would cause havoc, further undermining the deteriorating economic situation in the country.
Therefore, the AMS urges that the decision on masks be rescinded, especially in outdoor gatherings, and the people are advised to take all measures to prevent COVID infection.
