Mahinda to resign from premiership?
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has reportedly said that he would resign today (25) from his post if he fails to obtain 113 signatures from 113 MPs in his favour.
However, he previously said that he would only resign if the Opposition could show the 113 majority in parliament.
It is said that nearly 50 parliamentarians have signed a petition which was launched at the SLPP headquarters on Nelum Mawatha yesterday morning requesting the President to keep Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his post.
'don’t pull the President by the leg' – says Chamal
It is reported that Chamal Rajapaksa had not signed this petition.
It is said that his stance is that Mahinda Rajapaksa should resign and stop pulling the President by the leg and allow him to act independently at this crucial juncture.
However, while almost everyone has agreed to his request as he is the eldest member of the Rajapaksa family except only Basil Rajapaksa, Shiranthi Rajapaksa and Yoshitha Rajapaksa.
It is said that although a discussion was scheduled to be held between the President and the Prime Minister regarding the current political crisis and the post of Prime Minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa had gone to his home in Tangalle without attending the meeting.
