Kankesanthurai Harbour to handle cargo by 2021
Minister of Ports and Shipping and Southern Development Sagala Ratnayaka says the Kankesanthurai Harbour will begin handling general cargo ships before the end of 2021.
Taking to twitter Minister Ratnayaka said the Kankesanthurai Harbour Basin will be deepened to 9 meters while the current breakwater will be replaced as part of transformations at the Harbour.
The Minister also said one existing pier will be completely rehabilitated and a new pier will be constructed.
Minister Sagala Ratnayaka revealed that the Sri Lanka Ports Authority has already begun work relating to the plan on a 15-acre area within the Kankesanthurai Harbour premises.
The Ports and Shipping Minister said under the next phase work at the Kankesanthurai Harbour will expand to a 50-acre area.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is due to visit the Kankesanthurai Harbour in early February to kick-start the USD 45.27 million project.
