Court rejects request to prevent protests near Parliament
The Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (4) rejected the request by police for an order to prevent protests from taking place near Parliament on Thursday (5) and Friday (6).
Attorney-at-Law Kamal Wijesekera speaking to News 1st said the Thalangama Police, SSP for Mirihana, the Attorney General’s Department attempted to secure an order to prevent protests from taking place on the road leading to the Parliament.
Counsel for the respondents pointed out to the court that the request made by police was illegal and unconstitutional.
Attorney-at-Law Kamal Wijesekera said that police made submissions to the effect that the protest could violate the MPs privilege to enter parliament, however, counsel pointed out that that it was a wrong interpretation of the events.
